PD 3.2 SPR AVS protocol & Apple iPhone 17

Sep 28, 2025

The new launched Apple iPhone new Generation iPhone 17 series are all equipped with the PD 3.2 SPR AVS protocols, which has led to the innovation in quick charging technology and also boosted the development in third-party accessories.

Technical background & Standard evaluation

USB PD3.2 & AVS protocol

SPR AVS: It is the key new feature for PD3.2 protocol, full name is Standard Power Range Adjustable Voltage Supply. It allows the adapter to adjust the output voltage precisely based on unit 100mV increments in a range 9V to 20V.

Difference with old protocol: The similar AVS only existed in high power EPR( Extended power range) mode (>100W, 15-48V) for PD3.1. But for PD3.2, the SPR AVS can exist in a main and wider range 27W to 100W which highly improves the charging flexibility and efficiency of mid and low power devices.

Technical application and products of Apple

1.Technical upgrade of iPhone 17 series

All the new generation iPhone 17 including 17 Air adopt the Charge pump technology and support PD3.2 protocol.

Advantages :The combination of these two technologies allows the adapter to provide highy matched voltage for the device that can significantly increase the charging efficiency as well as reducing the heat caused by charging.

Official accessories by Apple

Apple launched the new 40W dynamic power adapter with 60W Max

It supports 5V/3A, 9V/3A, 15V/2.67A, 20V/2A and SPR AVS protocol, also got passed the professional testing.

Influence on the third-party accessories market

Other factories in this industry will follow Apple's new innovation and it will facilitate the development of the items supporting this new protocol.

Our JLX Power also released our 45W adapter that support such new protocol:

Summary

Technology progress

The combination of Charge pump technology and PD3.2 protocol of iPhone 17 series, aims to solve the problem on fast charging and heating, it's a big step forwarder for charging experience.

Standardization

Based on the open standard by USB-IF, it can helps to form unified standards in the industry and avoid fragmentation caused by protocol properties.

Market reformation

Apple's leadership in the charging industry drives the third-party accessories factories to use the AVS and PD3.2 protocols, and it will become a basic standard for mid-to-high-end charging adapters.
